Smoke Alarm Installation & Maintenance
Smoke alarms are one of the simplest ways to protect your home, but Queensland’s smoke alarm laws set out exactly what’s required, and it’s easy to fall behind on them without realising. PEG installs, tests and maintains smoke alarms for homes across Brisbane. Get in touch today and we’ll check your property against current requirements.
Smoke alarm laws in Queensland
QLD smoke alarm legislation has rolled out in stages since 2017, and the rules depend on your property type. New builds and homes that have undergone major renovations have needed compliant alarms since 2017. Homes being sold or leased have needed to meet the same standard since 1 January 2022. From 1 January 2027, every owner-occupied home in Queensland will need to meet that standard too, so plenty of homeowners still have work to do. Under current QLD smoke alarm requirements, alarms need to be photoelectric, interconnected so that one going off sets off every alarm in the home, and fitted in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms, and on every storey. Alarms also need replacing once they reach 10 years old. We can assess your home against these smoke alarm laws QLD and let you know honestly what’s needed to bring it up to standard.
Smoke alarm installation and testing
Smoke alarm installation and replacement is straightforward once we know your home’s layout and what’s currently fitted. We install interconnected photoelectric alarms in the right locations, wire them in properly if they’re hardwired, and test the full system before we leave. If you just need a smoke alarm service to check existing alarms are working and compliant, we can test, clean and replace units as needed rather than starting from scratch. Property sales and new tenancies both call for alarms to be checked and brought up to standard, and we can turn this around quickly when there’s a settlement or lease date to work to.

FAQs about our smoke alarm services
Who can install smoke alarms in QLD?
Hardwired smoke alarms need to be installed by a licensed electrician. We handle both hardwired and battery-powered interconnected alarms across Brisbane.
How many smoke alarms does my home need?
Queensland requirements call for an alarm in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every storey. The exact number depends on your home’s layout, and we can work this out during an assessment.
Do I need to upgrade my smoke alarms if I'm not selling or renting?
Not yet, but you will. Owner-occupied homes have until 1 January 2027 to meet the same standard already required for rentals and homes being sold.
Why does my smoke alarm keep beeping?
A smoke alarm that beeps intermittently is usually low on battery or approaching the end of its working life. Replacing the battery in a smoke alarm often solves it, but if the beeping continues, the unit itself may need replacing.
How often should smoke alarms be tested?
Alarms should be tested regularly, and rental properties legally need testing and cleaning within 30 days before a new tenancy or renewal. We offer smoke alarm testing across Brisbane for both homeowners and landlords.
What type of smoke alarm do I need under QLD law?
Current legislation requires photoelectric alarms that are interconnected with every other alarm in the home, rather than standalone or ionisation alarms.
Can you install smoke alarms as part of a property sale or new tenancy?
Yes. We regularly install and certify smoke alarms ahead of settlement dates and new leases, so the property meets requirements before it changes hands.
Do you service smoke alarms across all of Brisbane?
Yes, we provide smoke alarm installation, testing and maintenance across Brisbane and the surrounding suburbs.
